The city of Terre Haute is a small mid-western community that has a long history of being an average American city. Set in and against a big farming area it was the quintessential place to be from. The entire area was almost a textbook example of a great location for raising a family.
However since the farming community began having issues in the late eighties and then what industry there was in the area began to move out things began to decline. Property values started downward and foreclosures started being more common.
The last few years the economy has fallen hard and unemployment has jumped, farmers no longer have much of a hold on the community and since the real estate market is crashing and burning there is little to do in this sleepy town except to sit and watch the value of property drop.
Foreclosures and bank repossessions are at an historic level and promise to go even higher. The price of homes and property in the area is bad. Unless you actually have the home you live in paid for there is a 3 in 4 chance that you are upside down in your mortgage and that you owe more on it at this point in time than it is going to be worth in the foreseeable future.
Indiana as a state is in pretty bad shape in comparison to its neighbors and although there are pockets of bright spots where things are slightly better, the city of Terre Haute is not one of those spots.
Most of the property and homes that are affected her, as in many Midwestern locations are older homes some of which have been family owned for decades and have recently been borrowed against and are now being lost to foreclosure and repossession.
