Ned and his wife, Judy, lived in a small town about an hour northwest of Indianapolis, Indiana. Judy worked as a school nurse at the local elementary school, while Ned was running a tax service out of the first floor of the house that he had built. He had previously been a carpenter and had built a beautiful house out of pine wood. He had gotten bored with the woodworking and actually went to a law school so that he could open his own business helping people with their taxes. Although the house was a bit off of the beaten path, he received many customers thanks to his advertisement in the yellow pages.

Even though they lived within reasonable driving distance of Indianapolis and Gary, Indiana, two of the more dangerous cities in the United States, there town had always been considered safe.
