Lawyer's Home Office Suffers Only Smoke Damage
Author: Joseph Hildebrandt
Ned and his wife, Judy, lived in a small town about an hour northwest of Indianapolis, Indiana. Judy worked as a school nurse at the local elementary school, while Ned was running a tax service out of the first floor of the house that he had built. He had previously been a carpenter and had built a beautiful house out of pine wood. He had gotten bored with the woodworking and actually went to a law school so that he could open his own business helping people with their taxes. Although the house was a bit off of the beaten path, he received many customers thanks to his advertisement in the yellow pages.
Even though they lived within reasonable driving distance of Indianapolis and Gary, Indiana, two of the more dangerous cities in the United States, there town had always been considered safe. They even had a small police force in addition to the county sheriff who regularly patrolled the area. It was like typical small town America, with one stop light and a small store where all the town gossip circulated. Ned would often frequent the lunch counter at the store and get his daily dose of what was happening in town.
Needless to say, Ned and everyone in the town were shocked to hear that his neighbor down the street had been the victim of a home robbery. The neighbor had been on vacation and apparently no one had seen anything or heard anything. More than likely it wasn't anyone form the town, because the town was full of employed hard workers or retired couples. It was obvious that someone from outside the town had targeted the home, but as of that point none of the police had any clues. Fortunately their friend had been insured but the robbery really opened the eyes of the community members.
Town members started to recognize the changing world and some even started installing home security systems in their homes to protect them during extended vacations. Ned considered all of the sensitive files of his clients that he had stored in his home office and decided it would be in his best interest to install a home security system if they were ever to be a victim of a home invasion.
That winter, Ned and Judy started using their wood furnace to heat the home. Oil prices had risen to ridiculous levels and it was unnecessary to spend that money when they had the option for the cheaper alternative. They would constantly keep the fire stoked with wood, even when they left the house. It was a much better alternative than coming home to a cold house.
Before going to lunch one day, Ned threw a couple of logs into the furnace and went to lunch. As he was sitting at the counter he heard the sirens of the fire engines and saw them go up the road towards his house. After he had eaten lunch, he returned home to find the volunteer fire department in his yard, but the house undamaged. He asked what happened and they said they had been summoned by the home security company when the smoke detector had gone off. They entered the house and found smoke everywhere because the furnace door had not been shut all the way and some sparks had shot out onto the linoleum floor. This had caused the floor to start melting and smoking but fortunately their quick response had prevented any further damage. Without the home security system Ned would have probably have come home from lunch to find his home burned beyond repair.
In this recession the crime has spread from the cities to smaller towns throughout the country, and you can protect your home from this threat with adt home security. You will also be able to protect your home from other serious threats like fire when you install an ADT home alarm system
